Dr. Gielan Elmessiri
Gielan joined UN Women in April 2014 as the Egypt Project Coordinator for the joint EU-UN Women flagship programme on women’s political and economic empowerment in the Arab States region.
She has over 23 years of professional experience in development work in the areas of advocacy and partnerships, policy analysis and coordination, programme design and implementation, and knowledge building.
Gielan has designed and implemented sustainable and impactful initiatives such as the establishment of the first Professional Master degree in Gender and Development at an Egyptian public university.
In addition, she has experience in the management and supervision of the office, working closely with the Country Representative to consolidate the programme portfolio and raise results-focused delivery rates to achieve the set objectives. Prior to joining UN Women, Gielan was Senior Policy Officer for Gender and Development at the Netherlands embassy in Cairo responsible for identifying and appraising opportunities for Netherlands funding in the fields of gender equality and sustainable development.
She has also worked for the Ombudsman office for Gender Equality at the National Council for Women and before that at Environmental Quality International (EQI) in Egypt. Gielan holds a Master’s degree in Professional Development Studies from the American University in Cairo (AUC), and graduated from the Faculty of Mass Communication, AUC.
